HOW IT WORKS

Keeping It All Looking Perfect

We mostly deal with rising dampness. Do you have rising dampness problems and it feels like you need to repaint your walls every year? To determine if that is the problem look at the lower half of your walls, if you see it looks like your paint is bubbling and almost popping off the walls you know you have a dampness problem.

No matter how many times you scrape off those walls and repaint, it just pops back within six months to a year. The most common area for rising dampness inside your property is the wall behind your shower.

The reason for that can be one of two things or a combination, either your grout is missing inside the shower and water penetrates the wall each time you shower or the actual taps/mixer of your shower has a leak. You can also experience rising damp on exterior walls where drilling for ventilation is required so your walls have more opportunity to dry out. These problematic walls are usually walling that does not see a lot of sun and stay shaded for most of the day.

WHEN AGING STEPS IN

Other Issues

Other paint issues you could be experiencing are usually chalking, mold or mildew spots, yellowing, peeling, and cracks.

Chalking is when you rub your fingers over the painted surface and you have a powder residue on your fingers. The only way to address this is to scrape off the affected areas, prime the bare areas and paint with high-quality paint as most likely the cause of the chalking was due to inferior paint or thinning of the paint.

Mould or mildew can be identified by black/grey spots forming on a painted surface. It mostly occurs on bathroom ceilings due to the high moisture and poor ventilation. The solution would be to clean off the area with a solution of vinegar, Jik, and water, dry it completely then repaint it with high-quality anti-bacterial paint. Should the problem persist you will have to look at improving ventilation in the area by installing an air vent, extractor fan, or opening windows.

SOME SYMPTOMS

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Yellowing is usually due to a combination of no sunlight and oil-based paint. The best fix for this would be priming affected walls with a proper undercoat and painting with acrylic paint to avoid future discolouring.

Peeling is exactly what the word suggests and you can peel off areas of paint from walls with ease revealing the previous paint. The cause could be a few things from poor preparation of walls i.e. not cleaning the walls from dust or residue before applying new paint to it or it could be due to moisture. The solution would be to scrape off all the peeling paint, prepare the walls with an undercoat and then paint with quality paint.

Curing The Cause Of Cracking

Cracks on walls can be identified as hairline cracks, slight cracks, and moderate cracks that are the more severe cracks. Causes of cracks can be anything from settling cracks of a new home, water leaks, or inadequate or damaged foundations. Hairline cracks are those very small cracks that appear here and there in your home, they can be easily repaired with some filler and repainted. Moderate cracks can be anything from 1mm to 5mm and will have to be sealed with silicone to help allow for future movement.

When moderate cracks appear, there is usually a more serious cause such as foundation issues. We usually recommend underpinning to our clients when they are present to ensure future movement of the property is limited or stopped. Underpinning means increasing the foundation area to help spread the load of the house. Spreading the load will assist in further movement. We work together with an engineer to ensure placement of underpinning is most beneficial for your property needs.

These cracks will have to be monitored, should they become larger steel stitching will be required. Moderate cracks are the sort of cracks that require steel stitching. Steel stitching is like the name suggests steel that is bent over like the shape of a staple and inserted over the stitch to secure it. It is then plastered and painted.
